Doctor's Spot

"You are what you eat! "

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away! "

"The greatest wealth is health! "

What other sayings have we heard time and time again but not heeded as well as we should? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of age-old sayings that are passed down from generation to generation, but have they become so commonplace that we don't follow their important advice?

My latest favorite saying goes something like this:

"He who takes medicine and neglects his diet wastes the skill of his doctors."

Basically, food either makes us healthy or unhealthy, depending upon what it is, regardless of how knowledgeable our doctors are or how great their medicine is. But the most important part of this timeless bit of advice from an ancient Chinese proverb is that eating healthy to prevent illness is more important than waiting until you are ill and then taking medicine. It also implies that the best doctors will remind their patients to maintain a healthy diet rather than rely only on medicines to repair the damage inflicted by an unhealthy diet.

A healthy diet consists of a wide variety and balanced portion of vegetables, fruits, grains and protein from meat or other sources. Also, the more range of fruit and vegetable colors you eat, the more antioxidants, phytochemicals and other healthy nutrients you get. It is important to eat fruits and vegetables from a variety of color groups. How colorful is your fruit and vegetable drawer?

What are your favorite health sayings? And more importantly, do you live by them?
